Notes

Webmail has notes: short pages in Markdown, for yourself or for your whole team. Open them with Notes in the bar on the left, or g then n.

Personal and team notes

The list shows pinned notes first, then the latest changed. All, Mine and Team filter it, and the search box finds words in titles and text.

Writing

New note (or c) opens a title and the text in Markdown:

Save (or Ctrl+Enter / ⌘+Enter) shows the note as it reads. Edit (or e) changes it again. Pinned keeps it at the top of the list.

Tags and colours

Under the text when writing, Tags takes words separated by commas, such as work, ideas. Each note has up to 10 tags of up to 30 characters (letters, digits, spaces, -, _, . and /). They are kept in lower case, and a leading # is dropped. Colour gives the note a coloured edge in the list, from red, orange, yellow, green, teal, blue, purple, pink and grey.

The tags you use appear above the list, each with how many notes have it. Choose one to see only those notes; choose it again, or All tags, to see them all. A tag on a note works the same way. A new note written while a tag is chosen starts with that tag.

Tags and the colour belong to the note: on a team note, the whole team sees and changes them. Your personal notes' tags are never shown to anyone else, not even in the list of tags.

When two people change a team note at the same time, the second to save is told someone changed it meanwhile. They choose See theirs (and drop their own change) or Save mine over it. Nothing is overwritten without asking.

Events and tasks

A note can link your events and tasks. Link them from the calendar: open an event or task and choose the note under Add to a note…. The note then lists them under Events and tasks. Yours show their title and date, and open the calendar on that day. A finished task is struck through.

In a team note, everyone sees that a teammate linked something, but only the person whose event or task it is sees its title and date. Nobody sees someone else's calendar through a note. You can link only your own events and tasks. You can remove your own links, and on a note of your own, any link. Deleting the event or task removes its links.

Beside your mail

Beside mail (at the top of Notes, or on an open note), or g then p anywhere in webmail, opens your notes in a panel beside whatever is on screen, so you can read a message and write at the same time. On a wide screen it sits beside your mail; on a smaller one, over it. It stays open as you move around webmail, and opens again where you left it next time. Esc (or the ×) closes it.

It is made for jotting things down: everything you type saves by itself a moment after you stop, and the bottom of the panel says when it was last saved. The list at the top switches between your notes (and the team's) and + starts a new one, kept once you type something.

The buttons under the text:

The corner shows how many checklist items are done, and how many words and characters the note holds. Under …: Rename, Open in Notes (to pin it, share it with the team or see it formatted), Copy all, Download as text, Send as email (a new message with the note's text, its title as the subject), Clear (with an Undo for a few seconds) and Delete this note.

If someone (or you, in another window) saves the note while you are typing in it, you are told and choose Keep mine or Show theirs.
